Alive or Just Breathing?

Wednesday, January 06, 2016

Hello, it's me.

Haha, sorry I had to. Welcome to 2016! As we finish up the first official week of the new year, and everyone is trying desperately to pick up the pieces of keep up with their resolutions, it's a good time to reflect on how you want your year to look.

While you're reading this, you're probably eating, on your phone, listening to music, or all three. Am I right? If not, have you ever went to the bathroom and used your phone? How about binge-watching your fave show on Netflix for the 10th time while scrolling through your Twitter feed? What about snapchatting a whole concert? Yeah...I thought so. <insert smirking emoji>

Multitasking has become such a norm nowadays that we don't even realize we're doing it! Have you ever just watched TV? Or ever just sat and had a conversation with someone without looking at your phone? Don't get me wrong, I'm just as guilty as you are, but I stumbled upon this Ernest Hemingway quote and it changed my outlook for 2016:

"Try to learn to breathe deeply, really to taste food when you eat, and when you sleep really to sleep. Try as much as possible to wholly alive with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell. And when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough." - Ernest Hemingway

I'm not writing this post to tell you to put your phone down, there are enough videos guilt-tripping us to do that out there. I'm writing this to express how I want my 2016 to look. Maybe you guys can hold me accountable. <insert cheesy grin>

I've realized that I'm always doing two things at once. I'm never just enjoying what something has to offer, instead I skip ahead to thinking about what's next and it's so frustrating. Kyla, of Kyla Rae McCabe, wrote this awesome post about being busy vs. being mindful and it really inspired me to stop making excuses and be mindful of the life I've been given. Ever heard the cliché "live in the moment?" Well, I plan to use this cliché as my phrase for the year, and hopefully the rest of my life. I want to feel alive in 2016.

I'm going to start enjoying things for what they are, as Hemingway elegantly stated. When I'm hanging out with someone, I'm going to put my phone away and enjoy their presence. When I'm watching Netflix, I'm going to give it my full attention (and attempt not to watch five seasons in one sitting). I'm going to make the effort to go out and explore the city I live in. I'm going to experience things. And I'm going to document these experiences right here on Simply M, hopefully.

Will this make me feel alive or will I just be breathing? That's the hard part, huh?

Are you alive, or just breathing? Do you have a word/phrase for 2016?
