10 Reasons I Love Twitter Chats

Monday, January 18, 2016

About this time last year I created the Ultimate Guide to Twitter Chats where I rounded up a list of a few of the Twitter chats that I had heard about in the blogosphere (please let me know if I need to update anything!). Now, a year later, I wanted to share why I L O V E Twitter chats so much.

1) Connecting with other bloggers

It still blows my mind that we have the ability to connect with bloggers from all over the world, all while sitting cuddled up in our beds, typing away. In the business world it's called "networking," but I absolutely hate that word. It just makes what we're doing, which is connecting with other people, sound like something atrociously difficult, when in reality it's so simple! So I'll just go with connecting.

2) Friendships

I think I walk out, so to speak, with at least one new blogger friend from a good Twitter chat. I think my first real blogger friend was Natalie from Natillie. She was my first guest post on my blog and she invited me to one of my first Twitter chats, that she co-hosts, #USBloggerChat! :D Now, almost three years later, I have virtually met so many awesome people who write some kick-ass blogs! (:

3) Discovering new blogs

Along with connecting with bloggers and making some awesome friends, Twitter chats are also a great way to discover new blogs! Not necessarily new in the sense of they just started, but new meaning blogs you didn't know about. Plus, when you discover these blogs you also get a sense of the person behind the blog as well, which is a HUGE plus in my book.

4) Creating conversation

Have you ever got really caught up in a Twitter chat that you find yourself immersed in conversation? It's like striking gold! I absolutely love when bloggers take a topic and create a conversation rather than just answering the question. It creates discussions and, my next reason for loving Twitter chats, the opportunity to see various viewpoints.

5) Seeing different viewpoints

The blogging community is great in that most people have open minds and aren't afraid to express their opinions. You know you're in an awesome Twitter chat when there's a discussion going on and someone expresses an unpopular opinion, instead of everyone bashing that person, they challenge them to see their viewpoint and try to understand where they're coming from. I know, it sounds like an ideal world, but the blogging community is pretty awesome in that way! (:

6) Learning

From the conversations and different viewpoints, I have learned so much, not only about blogging, but other components as well like social media, HTML, and photography. I've learned to look at things in different ways and to challenge myself as a blogger as well.

7) Inspiration

This goes hand-in-hand with the previous four reasons I've mentioned. There's something about being immersed in discussion and learning about all the different viewpoints in the blogging community that just inspires me. I usually end up with at least two to three ideas for posts and sometimes even photo ideas, even though I have no experience with photography. As a blogger you know there are two things that are hard to come by: inspiration and, #8 on my list, motivation.

8) Motivation

You know a Twitter chat was really awesome when you walk out with inspiration AND motivation. Being a college/university student, working a part-time job and attempting to run a blog can tire out the best of us, so having motivation to actually write a post and engage on social media is quite the challenge. I don't know what it is about having a good discussion online with people who have mutual interests but it really just gets the wheels turning. (:

9) Seeing what's trending

Usually the topics for Twitter chats are related to what's trending in the blogging world. Also, since Twitter chats are usually held weekly, it really helps you stay up to speed with what's going on in the blogosphere and see how you can stay on top of your game.

10) Building your brand

I didn't really start thinking about my "brand" until recently but now I've made more of a conscious effort to carry my brand throughout all of my sites, whether it be my blog, social media or professional profiles. Even though I'm still trying to figure out what exactly I want my brand to be, I have a general idea of what I want people to think when they see the Serenity blue heart with an "M" in it. (:

Of course I could probably think of a billion more reasons why I love Twitter chats so much but a) I don't know how long it would take to actually list out all those reasons and b) I have a chat to attend to here soon! Hehe. The chats I engage with the most, if I remember to attend, are #USBloggerChat, #lbloggers, and #bdib. What are some of your favorite chats?
