5 Slang Words I Will Never Understand

Thursday, March 19, 2015

I don't know if it's just because I haven't been in high school for two years, or if I'm just not paying attention, but the some of this new slang is just flying over my head. I hear people say these words and I just can't comprehend a) who made up this word and b) why do they think it's cool??

I feel really old saying that, but I just don't understand. o; Without further adieu, here are 5 slang words I will NEVER understand.

When I first started seeing this word pop up I was so confused. I thought it was short for baby but later found out it was its own word that meant "before anyone else." Then, people started using it constantly and it just got so annoying. o; I mean use it once in a while...okay, but people used it for every single caption on Instagram or to describe every single person that meant something to them. The only way I would ever use "bae" in my vocabulary would be in a joking manner, NEVER seriously. Oh. My. Goodness. (Blogger really needs to find a way to incorporate emojis because the sighing emoji would work perfectly here)

Example uses taken from Urban Dictionary:
1) I love you bae.
2) Stupid friend: "Hey bae, what's up?"
    You: "Shut up."
Stupid friend: "Aw, what's wrong bae?"

This one I will absolutely never understand. First off, it's really weird to say and secondly, where does it come from?? Like at least "bae" has something it stands for...fleek I feel like just came out of thin air, which is totally fine...I just don't get it. Fleek. Nope. Don't understand. The first time I heard it was when someone was describing Kylie Jenner's eyebrows as "on fleek." I had to ask my 16-year-old sister what it meant...o; How sad is that?! I didn't think there was that much of an age gap...I'm only 19. o;

Example uses taken from Urban Dictionary:
1) Eyebrows on fleek.
2) Her hair was on point, but her outfit was off the chain. My homegirl stay on fleek!

I think the most times I've heard slay used is when people describe Beyoncé. I haven't heard this one as much but probably because I don't pay much attention. Just sitting here and typing this is making me feel really old, even though I'm not. I don't know why these words don't make any sense to me. Like the only definition of "slay" I'm familiar with is in regards to killing something, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. <insert laughing crying face emoji>

Example uses taken from Urban Dictionary:
1) Ohmygah...that slays me!
2) Miley's new album slayed!

This one just makes me laugh! I can actually see where this one comes from but I probably won't be using it anytime soon. It just seems like a sassier way of saying that someone's talking sh*t. <insert sassy girl emoji>

Example uses taken from Urban Dictionary:
1) Girl, you call yourself legendary? More like leg and dairy!
    Why you throwin' shade?
2) "I don't rely on tits to have hits." - Adele
This could be as interpreted as throwing shade at Katy Perry.

I honestly have only heard this a couple of times and had no idea what it meant until I looked it up today...and it still didn't help. Yeet. So odd. Just like fleek. o_o Probably won't ever understand, but if you understand feel free to enlighten me.

Example uses taken from Urban Dictionary:
1) Ayee he scored, YEET!
2) Ole girl just got in a fight! Yeet!

I hope you enjoyed this excruciatingly painful journey of figuring out these slang words with me. Lol, jokes! I don't really care much about slang words, just never really understood these particular five. If you use them, don't take offense! This is just a fun post to express my confusion of the new teens. o_o

All the definitions used are from Urban Dictionary, so please don't take it seriously. (-:

Also, just a warning: Urban Dictionary uses a lot of explicit language!

I must be honest I use some of these words on a daily basis like "throwing shade" but I usually just reserve that for talking slang with my mom out of fun lol...yeah I'm the old one haha! I just recentely heard of "fleek" and even used it for hashtags when I first heard about it lol...oh these silly trends! I've never understood "bae" and what in the world is "Yeet!" I dont think I'll ever understand "Yeet" that sounds like another crazy word for fleek! I dont always use trendy words but when I do its always with my family!

  3. I also don't get any of those words. I like using proper words- I honestly have no interest in picking on these shortlived slangs.

  4. OMG, this is getting tweeted out. SO TRUE. I get so annoyed when I hear these words. I'm thinking: How old are you? Why do you insist on not sounding educated? SLANG IS STUPID. I seriously feel so old. I'm not THAT old, but still... someone told me my eyebrows were "on fleek" the other day and I was like "whaaaaa???" Smh. Best. Post. Ever.

  5. Great post! I'm 15 and use all of these, except the last one. It's crazy to think how the slang that we commonly use now isn't known by people just a few years older. Anyway, this is a brilliant post and I'd love to see more things like this on your blog!

  12. Haha, thanks again for sharing! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :D Lol, well getting told your eyebrows are "on fleek" is a compliment at least. (-: Slang is so interesting though! Like a group of people around the same age make up these words that just happen to be super catchy and boom! a slang word is born. Crazy stuff!

  13. It's so neat to see it from the perspective of someone younger who actually uses these words! :D I know! It's so crazy how I'm only four years older than you yet have no idea what half these words mean. (x I'm glad you enjoyed it! ((:

  14. Haha, yeah it took me a while to learn what all these meant...mostly from my little sister or Google. xD It blows my mind how such a small age difference can lead to such a huge gap in vocabulary. o_o I'm glad you enjoyed it Danielle! :D

  15. Haha, I'm not sure if it really is Danish for poop...that's just what someone on Urban Dictionary put. xD Yeah it does stand for "before anyone else," which I guess is cute, but for the longest time I thought it was just short for baby. xD Glad you enjoyed it! :D

  16. Lmao, I wasn't sure when I posted this if it really was Danish for poop because it was someone's definition off of Urban Dictionary but I just Googled it and it is! xD Yeah, it has gotten a bit annoying and not at all! I think the only reason I heard of them is because of my younger sister to be honest. o;

  18. BAE means "Before all Else" HAHA but it's still silly. I've been know to say "slay" from time to time - really just another form of "killing it" but people got bored with that lol.
