iOS 8: My Favorite New Features.

iOS 8 Logo Source

So iOS 8 was released Wednesday (September 17) and Twitter was blowing up with iOS 8 related tweets. The majority were either complaining about how long it was taking or they were wondering if they should even get it. If you update it through your device it takes up ALOT of memory so to avoid deleting your photos and Bible apps (lol) plug your device into your computer and download it through iTunes. You won't have to delete a thing!

If you haven't gotten it yet it's not really that big of a deal, but there are some cool new features. Here are some features that I have been liking so far. (:

1) Quick Reply

I think this feature is really helpful, especially when you're on an app or even when you can't be bothered to put in your passcode. There are actually two ways to use this feature:

1) If you're actually using your phone and the message appears on top, you just pull down on the message and you can reply that way. (see image on left)

2) The other way is if you're not on your phone and a message pops up on your lock screen, you can just swipe right on the message and reply that way. (see image on right)

2) Check Battery Usage of Apps

Another cool feature of iOS 8 is the fact that you can check which of your apps are draining your battery the most. Or technically, according to the description at the bottom, it "shows proportion of battery used by each app when iPhone is not charging."

To check your battery usage go to Settings>General>Usage>Battery Usage and wallah! You can see which apps you use the most and therefore drain your battery the most!

And then at the top it has the information it had before, your Usage and Standby since your last full charge.

The reason I like that Apple added this feature is because it's a nice way to see which apps you use the most and what apps you don't seem to use at all, all in one place.

You can also check your battery usage in the last 24 hours and the last two days.

3) Self-Timer

I especially like the new self-timer feature because now  I don't have to get a separate app just so I can take a full ootd picture of myself. ;D

When you open your camera you'll see a new icon at the top of the screen that looks like a dial to the left of the camera icon where you can switch between front face and the regular camera view. If you tap on the dial you can choose either 3 seconds or 10 seconds as the time to take your picture. It works on both the front face and regular camera.

4) Time-Lapse

Another cool camera feature is the Time-Lapse option. Now if you have the 5s you got a Slow Mo feature but now anyone with iOS 8 gets the Time-Lapse feature.

With the Time-Lapse option you can record in real time and then once you're done recording, it will speed up the video. Time-Lapse videos look especially nice when it's of a sunset/sunrise, the clouds, or basically anything that usually goes really slow and would look cool if you sped it up. A lot of YouTubers use it when they're doing a drawing, cooking something, doing their hair, etc.

I'm not sure if that was the best explanation so this is an example of a Time-Lapse video by National Geographic.

Okay maybe the iPhone doesn't have THAT capability, but it's still cool that we can shoot videos that are similar in nature all with a click of a button! Definitely excited to use this feature!

5) Medical ID

Medical ID is apart of the new Health app that is installed on your device when you update to iOS 8. I haven't really gotten around to using the Health app just yet, but a cool feature that you can use through it is something called Medical ID. Basically it's like an ID card for your phone so if you get sick or something, someone could go on your phone and see what could have possibly gone wrong or how they could help. The first thing you should do is obviously call 911 (or whatever your countries' number is for emergencies) and then that could be another way to find out information.

You just fill out your basic information like your name and birthdate and then your medical information like, allergies medications, etc. You can also add a picture as well. I just think it's a great idea and if someone needs to look at your Medical ID they can just swipe left to get to the Passcode screen, click on Emergency in the bottom left-hand corner, and then click on *Medical ID in the bottom left-hand corner.

6) What song is this?

Ever hear a song on the radio and wonder what it is? Well I'm pretty sure most of us have been there and most people have heard of the app called "Shazam," which is a music identification service. Well now if you have iOS 8 you have one less app to worry about because now you can ask Siri what song is playing.

All you have to do is hold down your home button and ask Siri something along the lines of "What song is this?" and then Siri will respond with something like "Hold on, let me listen." Then you would let Siri listen to the song and within a couple seconds she'll have a response for you.

I've tried it myself and it actually works. Now remixes get a bit tricky but I think it's really helpful for those times where you find a song you really like and you just can't figure out what the name is. Another thing that I think is cool about this feature is that it uses Shazam and you can buy it right then and there if you want. Pretty neat! (:

7) Easier Access to Favorites

This new feature is just something nice so you can get to your
favorites, or most recent, contacts faster.

All you have to do is press your home button twice and they'll pop up along the top of the screen. If you click on one of them it'll give you two options: call or message. Just a neat way to get to your contacts faster! (:

8) Recover Deleted Pictures

I'm not really sure if I like this feature too much, but I do think it's a cool idea. Basically, when you delete your pictures/videos it won't actually delete them. Instead, it'll send it to a new album called "Recently Deleted" and it'll tell you how many days there are left until the photos or videos are permanently deleted, which is usually 30 days.

I'm kind of half and half on this feature. I like it incase I accidentally delete a picture/video I wanted, but then again if I delete an embarrassing picture/video and forget about that album, it'll still be there for 30 more days!

What do you think of this feature? Helpful or definitely a disaster? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!

9) Better Weather

This feature probably isn't that big of a deal to most people but Apple has now switched their weather from Yahoo! to using The Weather Channel.

So now instead of showing just 5 days of the week, it shows 9 days of the week along with other details like sunrise, sunset, chance of rain, etc. It also shows more hours. I don't know, I always check the weather so I liked that they upgraded to The Weather Channel. (-:

10) Custom Keyboard

I like my keyboard simple and clean, just the way it is, however, I do think that it's nice that Apple now gives the option to customize your keyboard. Now I don't mean you can just add different colors and designs, you can also now use features like Swype

All you have to do is go to the App Store, search for iOS 8 keyboards and you'll get a long list of different keyboards you can use. Then after you've installed an app you like, go to Settings>General>Keyboard>Keyboards>[Name of App You installed]>Allow Full Access.

This will allow the app to connect to your keyboard. Then if you go to your keyboard, hold down the globe icon, near the bottom left-hand side, and choose the new keyboard you want to use. (ALSO, you can turn off the feature where your device tries to predict your words, "Predictive,"  this way too)

And those are my current favorite iOS 8 features! Have you gotten iOS 8 yet? If so, what are some of your new features you've been liking? I'd love to hear of some other, "secret" features as well! I've heard of the Grayscale feature (which I think is so weird), and where you can change the exposure on your pictures before you take them using the little sun that pops up. Any other features you've heard of? Let me know in the comments below! (:
