"Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful." - Buddha

As an incoming college freshmen the idea of paying thousands of dollars for your education is a bit daunting. Before receiving my financial aid I was stressing out! Almost 1/4 of the U.S. population owes $700 billion in student loan debt! Scholarship America's goal is to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to go to college and come out with a lower debt.

"Scholarship America's mission is to mobilize America, through scholarships and education support, to make post-secondary success possible for all students. Our vision is to be the nationally recognized leader in providing private scholarships and other financial support, to make the completion of education beyond high school a reality for all."

Scholarship America, originally called "Dollars for Scholars," was founded in 1958 by Dr. Irving Fradkin, an optometrist in Massachusetts. He had a simple idea--"if everyone in his community gave just a dollar to an educational fund, it would be enough to help nearly every student in the community attend college." This idea has now expanded to what today is "the nation's largest non-profit, private-sector scholarship and educational support organization."

After over 50 years of providing an education for students, Scholarship America has distributed over $2.9 billion to 1.9 million students across the country! Entering their second half-century of helping students, their goal is to ave assisted 750,000 students in completing college by 2025.

They also have a variety of scholarship programs including the Dream Award, Families of Freedom and other Open Scholarships.

So what can you do to help? Volunteer or donate! For more information you can visit their website at

It's incredibly ridiculous to me how high the student debt is in the U.S. alone! College kids should not have to worry about paying for college, they should be able to focus on their education to better their futures. I hope Scholarship America exceeds their goal in helping lower student debt!
