"Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns; I am thankful that thorns have roses." - Alphonse Karr

Today's charities: Freerice & TOMS
Freerice is a non-profit website set on providing free education to everyone and helping end world hunger. It's owned by the United Nations World Food Programme.

"Freerice has two goals: 1) Provide education to everyone for free. 2) Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free."

Basically, Freerice is a website where you take a series of quizzes; for every answer you get correct, Freerice will donate 10 grains of rice through the World Food Programme. To increase the amount of answers you get correct, you can choose a subject you feel comfortable with. The subjects range from basic math and English skills to different languages and trivia. Today, Freerice is well-known and with over 2 billion active users, everyone has raised enough rice to feed millions of people.

I've heard of this site before and I think it's an awesome way to increase education and help end world hunger. All you have to do is answer some simple questions. I thought since I'm already on the website, I have to take a quiz. I opted to test my Spanish skills so here are my results! (P.S.: Even if you get an answer wrong you can still continue playing. It's ultimately your choice when you want to stop.)

Mostly everyone knows about TOMS. TOMS is a shoe brand but it's unique in that it has a program called One for One. Basically, for every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. However, they don't stop there. There's a whole process and it all starts with a purchase.
This infographic from the TOMS website shows the process after you purchase a pair of TOMS.
"Your new shoes help other kids move forward." TOMS gives new shoes that are specifically designed for the children who wear them. Along with the new shoes, children are taught about hygiene and healthy behaviors.

TOMS also has eyewear that contributes to the One for One program. "Your eyewear purchase helps others see." TOMS supports sustainable eye care organizations so they can provide people in need with prescription glasses, medical treatment, and sight-saving surgery. To learn more about the TOMS programs you can visit their website here.

"Sustainable giving in over 50 countries: As more customers join our movement, we can make more long-term commitments to our Shoe and Sight Giving Partners. This provides opportunities to provide kids with shoes as they grow, and for consistent outreach to communities without access to eye care."

Blake Mycoskie is the Founder, Chief Shoe Giver of TOMS, and the person behind the idea of One for One.

Traveling in Argentina, Blake witnessed something he had never really noticed before, how children were suffering daily because of their lack of shoes. His solution was to create a for-profit business that was sustainable and not reliant on donations. This vision soon turned into the idea that provided a powerful foundation for TOMS. Since its beginnings in 2006, TOMS has given over 2 million pairs of new shoes to children in need.

So whether you want to take some quizzes online or go out and buy a pair of shoes/sunglasses, you'll know you are making a difference in someone's life. I'm amazed that we have come so far that we can change lives from our homes or even from going shopping! Just remember, you should be grateful that you have access to computers and shoes. Never take anything for granted and keep doing what you do!
